Covering up the smell of curry?

My neighbor in my apartment complex is from India. The smell of curry from their apartment is coming into mine via the open windows. Summer is upon us and I have no choice but to leave the windows open or be forced to run the air conditioner and pay a hefty electric bill. Is there a way I can cover up the smell of curry during the summer months? I tried candles, but the curry is too strong.

Lol, Febreeze ?
Cook something really smelly from your country and hope it floats into their appartment
GOOD LUCK

I had this problem too. I would mention it to the apartment complex as well and see if they have any answers or restrictions.

Try the plug ins…I swear by those, and if its soooo bad, try boiling water and vinegar, with all windows closed and I swear the smell will be gone by the time the sun sets!

Set out dishes of white vinegar and change them every so often. If you are friendly with your neighbors and/or landlord, it might be worth it to mention it to them…you understand their position and the right to cook how they want, but maybe they can invest in an over the range filter or something so it isn’t so disruptive to you.

plug ins – citrus ones are the best

You can try air freshener? Use febreeze on your sofa, linens, etc. Vacuum often so that the smell is removed from your carpet and/or rugs if you have them.

Try incense or just go over and eat with them when they are cookin. If this doesn’t work talk to the authorities in your complex.

Boil cinnamon sticks. You can purchase them from the supermarket. We use these when we fry fish.

Things You’ll Need:

Sponge
Dish soap
Live microbial agent
Spray bottle
Air filter

Step1
Sniff around your home the day after you prepare a meal that uses curry. Go outside for a while and close the door behind you. When you go back in, you should be able to smell the lingering curry odor, if it is still present.

Step2
Open the windows and air out your house, particularly if it is a windy day. Allow your house to air for six to eight hours before determining if the smell has gone. Wash cabinets with soap and water, mop the floor and vacuum the carpets throughout your house.

Step3
Visit your local hardware store and look for a live microbial agent, if the smell is still evident. The lingering odor of curry is a problem because of the oil. Mix one part live microbial agent with one part water, in a spray bottle, to use as a degreaser.

Step4
Degrease everything. Spray the live microbial solution over every surface in your home. Include curtains, carpet, countertops and anything else in your home. Treat your kitchen drains per manufacturer’s directions.

Step5
Allow the treated areas to air dry with open windows. Repeat the treatment weekly until the lingering odor has disappeared.

Step6
Replace your air filter to be sure you are not further circulating the odor of curry.

Tips:

When cooking with curry, be sure to use as much ventilation as possible to avoid a lingering, overwhelming odor.

Some people suggest using an ozone generator. This works to some extent, but may also degrade rubber and other materials in your home.

Reports have shown that it is almost impossible to remove curry odor from an apartment. Painting and shampooing the carpets are helpful, but not always successful in getting rid of the curry smell.
