Can I use curry powder instead of curry paste?
I’m making a chinese style curry shrimp recipe and I don’t have any curry paste. Can I substitute it with the powder?
The recipe I’m using has milk in it.
I do not like coconut milk. I hate anything coconut flavored.

By using curry powder you will get the essence of curry but you will not get the color, spiciness, or aroma.. I would suggest not using it if you are making a meat or seafood based dish. However if you are making a sauce or dip, it should be ok to use
Yes you can but you need some sort of sauce/liquid which you can put the powder. So try a little milk or similar
Can you use coconut milk instead?
Anyways, here is a curry paste recipe:
1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and chopped
1/4 cup garlic, minced
1/2 small onion, chopped
1/4 cup curry powder
1/4 cup cayenne
1. Put it all in one of those little mini-processors and zoom it a couple of times.
2. Add a little bit of water, or oil, to make a paste and zoom it until it all comes together.
